Unethical SEO Techniques

By James D Day

Search engine spaming substantially increases the possibility that a website will appear at the top of the search results for a certain keyword. Companies that use unethical types of SEO to improve their search engine positions are just asking to be penalized. Acquire your search engine position fairly, never sacrifice your principles just to achieve your goals. There will be great risks involved, such as, your website can be penalized or worse banned from many search engines. Here are several unethical SEO techniques:
Always avoid keyword stuffing and the repetitive use of the same keywords in your META tags, comments, alt images or anywhere in your content. Also avoid Inserting hidden links or text that are only readable by search engines but can not be seen by the human eye. For instance, using a white link or white text with the appropriate keywords in a web page with a white background. Your visitors can not detect it and won't even notice the difference, however search engine spiders can read hidden text.
Mirror web pages, these are several sites having identical contents but different URLs, all linking to one another constructed for one objective. Also doorway web pages, which are webpages of poor quality, constructed to rank high for one or more selected keywords. These do not affect your website visitors and are only constructed for search engines. These pages can contain the exact content of other sites but generally exhibit only a link pointing to the main page with no navigational menu.
URL cloaking delivers many different web pages for search engines and visitors. Webmasters construct their servers so that they can identify IP addresses of the search engine spiders then provide them with content rich and optimized pages, at the same time displaying different web pages for individuals. URL cloaking can also redirect a visitor to their home page.
Link farms and FFA pages are purposely created to acquire link popularity only and should be avoided at all costs. Link farms are typically one page websites consisting of up to one hundred or more links to different categorized websites having no similarity with your website’s content. Search engine spammers should be aware of the fact that their pages content are of poor quality and are useless to individuals that visit their site.
SEO spamming can in reality bring about high rankings. Keep in mind that the effect is only temporary. Webmasters using these types of SEO methods can benefit from their high search engine position for days, weeks, even months however, once search engines discover webmasters using these unethical techniques, then they will be banned from the search engine index possibly for good. After being removed from the index it is very difficult to be re-indexed. You may need to start over and secure a new domain name. Before using any unethical SEO techniques, think wisely and weigh the options. Are you prepared to put your entire internet business in jeopardy just for months of obtaining a high rank in the search results?

8 Essential SEO techniques

By Matt Colyer

1) Title Tag - The title tag is the most powerful on-site SEO technique you have, so use it creatively! What you place in the title tag should only be one thing, the exact keyword you used for the web page that you are trying to optimize. Every single web page should have it's own title tag.
2) ALT Tags - ALT tags were meant to be for text browsers because the images didn't show in text browsers and the ATL tags would tell the visitor what it's about. You should put your main keyword(s) in the ALT tags, but don't over do it because you could get dropped in the results or even worse banned for life!
3) Link Popularity - Link popularity is the most powerful SEO tool out of all them. Most search engines don't even consider web sites if there is not at least one or two links pointing to the web site. Having another site(s) link to your web site is important when it comes to getting your site a good ranking. Your keywords should be in the links you get and keep the keywords short. When you receive requests for a link exchange, check the site out before linking with them, check for spam (Repeat keywords, hidden text, etc.).
4) Keyword Density - This is also vital and should be used with research. You should use the keyword(s) once in the title tag, once in the heading tag, once in bold text, and get the density between 5% to 20% (Don't over do it!). Also use your keyword(s) both low and high on the web page, keyword(s) should be in the first sentence and in the last one.
5) Page Size - Your web page's speed is important to your visitors and the search engines. Why? Because the robots will be able to spider your web page faster and easier. Try your best to keep your web page over 5k and under 15k in size.
6) Rich Theme - Search engines are looking at themes more and more. Build content (Articles, FAQ, tips, etc.) much as possible and keep the web pages around 200 to 500 words. Create content that's related to your market and link them out to other related content on your site. Try to get 200 web pages or more.
7) Web Site Design - This is also important, if you want to get indexed! Text content should out weigh the HTML content. The pages should validate and be usable in all of today's leading edge browsers. Stay away from flash and Java Script, search engines dislike them both a lot.
8) Insite Cross Linking - This will help you get all of your web pages indexed by the search engines. Your web pages should be no more than three clicks away from the home page. Link to topic related quality content across your site. This will also help build you a better theme through out your web site. On every page you should link back to your home page and your main service(s).

SEO and SEO Techniques

By Joanna Carla Simbajon

What is SEO?
SEO or a short term for Search Engine Optimization, is an active practice of outnumbering visitors by improving both intrinsic and extraneous aspects of a web, therefore increasing the volume of traffic to the site. This can be possible if the website ranks itself at the highest position in a search result of a particular search engine. Internet users usually click on search results that are posted first before them. It's rare that they scan through pages just to look and read for the facts that they need. In that case, the site which was earlier presented or initially given as the result for the search is oftentimes visited. So if users or researchers type in keywords that relate to your keywords too, and they find your site on the primary page of any search engine result, your site will be popularly visited since you obtained the highest search engine result position.
On the other hand, in order for search engines to read, understand and eventually index your site, SEO must analyze and identify your site foremostly. This is done only by supplementing or modifying obscure texts in your content so that search engines will be able to read the site. It is not spamming search engines, it is just assisting search engines in helping you promote your site. There is an immense need for SEO because if the content of your site is vague or can not be understood by search engines, they will ignore it and they will not index it. And if that happens, all your hard work plus the money you've invested in making the site will all be a waste. So to be sure if your site is acceptable to a particular search engine, make use of SEOs or optimizing tools; thus it would increase the possibility of seeing your site in a search engine.
SEO Techniques:
There are diverse techniques in Search Engine Optimization. It is significant to do it in a subtle and sure way. The following are:
1.The use of SEO Tools.SEO tools are used in optimizing your sites. These tools will allow you to scrutinize whether your keywords are the best phrases for your site, to see the total pages you have in the various search engine databases, to check the page rank as well as the backlinks of your competitors. But if you are still creating or planning to make your own site, these tools are helpful in opting the right keyword phrases for you, in giving you synonymous terms related to your keywords to include in your page, and in viewing the page rank and backlinks of the sites you will be competing with for your targeted keyword phrases. There are various tools that could help you that can be searched through the Web.
2.Creating Keyword Phrases for your site.In generating keywords for your site, make sure that those are search able or can be easily searched. There are tools that could aid you in checking your constructed keywords to find out how often they are being searched. Or you can also go for SEO tools that could give suggestions for different keyword phrases apt to your site. Now, if you already have one, add keyword synonyms to your content. Be sure to put those keyword phrases in the title. You should also insert those keywords in a heading1 tag at the outset of your page and those keyword synonyms in a heading2 tag. These tags are useful in identifying which one is the title and subtitle in the article.
3.Keyword DensityIt is important to heed on keyword density, because it is the percentage of how often you use your keywords or keyword phrases in the content of your site. The higher the keyword density, the more it will be considered as a search engine spam and can get you blacklisted. It is advisable to include those keywords at the top of your page and your keyword phrases in every paragraph or every second or next paragraph, depending on the paragraph length.
4.Construction of title tags, meta description tags, meta keyword tags.Fabricating title tags is one of the most crucial things in SEO. You have to make sure that every page should have differing titles, consisting of 2-3 keyword phrases that you have created. When people are searching for something and the results are displayed before them, the title is the first thing they will notice. Under the title is a description of your content. The beginning of your details should also possess 2-3 of your keyword phrases. Since your titles in every page differ from one another, description tags might as well go with it. On the other hand, meta keyword tags are not that noticeable and important as to constructing the title and description tags. But the need to put it in every page is somehow necessary. And just like the two mentioned earlier, these keyword tags also should vary in every page.
5.In selecting Domain and File Names.Select a domain name that is easy to spell and easy to remember, and thus contains words from your original keyword phrase. So is with the creation of your file name, your keyword phrases should go with it.
6.Your Content quality and quantity matters. The excellence of your content may lead your site to "forwarding links" from other resource sites. This will also grab people's attention and eventually bring them back again or share your site to others . Always keep your keyword phrases in mind in writing the content of your site. So as to volume, the more facts you share, the better it would sound to the readers.
7.Separate the Content from your Presentation.Separate your content html from the presentation code itself by using Cascading Styles Sheets (CSS) for the latter. It will make your html files up to 50% stinted, which is more preferable for search engine bots. And the more substance you have compared to the presentation, the more you get rated.
8.The Author and Robots Tags. The company that owns the site should be found in the author tag. This tag will endow your company's name the possibility to get the #1 position. This is done by using this: . In generating a robot tag, use a common tag in all pages that you want to be indexed. This will instruct the robots to look over for the page. A generic robots tag is: .
9.Backlinks.A backlink is a link from other websites from which you have trade links with. This is simply explained by an example wherein an Internet user views the page of one of the sites which you had trade links with. When it happens he sees a word in the text related to your keyword phrases, when he clicks the word, which is actually a link to your site, your page will be opened immediately. It is said that it is better to gain numerous relevant backlinks to your site than submitting it directly to a search engine. It is far more better to obtain a high Search Engine Results Position (SERP) than a Page rank itself. The more connected the backlinks are, the higher SERP you will get. So be very careful in choosing sites to reciprocate links with. Always consider the relevance of your keyword phrases and content.
10.Page Rank. You will be able to gain high Page Rank if you have several backward links from other website pages which have a higher page rank rating than your site. The search engines update PRs once a month when they update their databases of web pages.
In your pursuance in aiming for a high PR, keep in mind that numerous backlinks will get you a higher SERP than just a plain high PR. You should always aim in gaining proper backlinks for your site, and not just on high page ranking.
11.Get rid of making Dynamic URLs.As much as possible, avoid including symbols like "?" in your URL because some search engines find it hard to read them. Create a static page as much as possible. Dynamic URLs are usually via asp, php and cf documents.
12.Frames on Pages. Some tend to put frames on their pages. But unfortunately, most of the search engines can not read frame links. So to be sure, you should provide an alternate method for them to crawl in and index your site.
13.Site Maps, Themes and Designs.Make sure you construct a good menu system or what we call the site map for your page. A good site map is having one on each page and contains a link to every page on a website. On the other hand, good site themes focuses only on one specific topic. Also, by using like keyword phrases in each page, the search engine will detect a theme that will sooner be advantageous to you. Hence, this will put you to a better rank. The Site design mainly points out to the color of your site. Just see to it that your site is attractive to the viewers. The color should not be bad for the sight and convenience in manipulating the page is offered. Like placing the menu bar and other important accessories in your page on the same place.
14.Bad Techniques. Some techniques are considered spam like cloaking or camouflaging, including unseen texts, minute texts, identical pages, doorway pages, refresh tags, link farms, filling comment tags with keyword phrases only, using keyword phrases in the author tag, high keyword density, mirror pages and sites.
15.Submission to Search Engines. After having completed the content of your website and applied the techniques prior to this, your site is now ready to be published on the Internet. You are opted to either submit your site to top search engines or obtain backlinks from other websites which have relevant substance as yours so that the bots will be the one to find your site. The top three search engines are Google, Yahoo and the MSN. These three have URL submission forms which one has to fill up first before completely submitting the website. Both Google and Yahoo search engines have free submission. However, there is a search engine which requires payment but it is guaranteed that your website will be placed to the high ranking search engines that can be viewed worldwide.
So to sum up, a good Search Engine Optimizing is a combination of design, user-friendliness and considering the web site's substantial content.

Breaking SEO Myths Part One: The SEO Expert

By Daniel Dessinger

Could there be another industry more inflated by ego, misinformation, and repetition than search engine optimization? Perhaps there are a few others out there, but not many. But what else can one expect from an unregulated industry? There's no FCC, FTC, FEC, FMC, FERC, HIPAA, ATF, SEC, FAA or any other acronymed agency standardizing legitimate SEO practices.
Search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask Jeeves each have their own secret algorithms which mathematically select, arrange, and prioritize search results. No two search engines work the same. No two search engines yield exactly the same search results (unless they are actually powered by the same search engine but packaged under different names). No SEO “expert” or firm knows all of the search engines’ secrets. So how do they write so many articles, blogs, and forums with such authority? And why are the ones pinky swearing that they’re honest only telling you enough to maintain enough mystery to keep you relying upon their expertise and yet still wondering what the heck they are doing behind those closed doors?
Am I saying that they’re all scam artists? No. Many of them aren’t. But even the ones who are legit are still count on an air of mystery and difficulty to keep the client from demanding too many specific answers. Why? Because if these search engine specialists revealed all that they know to a client, they know that an intelligent client would be unimpressed. The truth is that most companies could perform their own SEO and be quite successful. There are exceptions, like the home mortgage industry. Certain industries are so competitive in organic search that most companies will not be able to compete even with professional natural SEO services.
So why should a company hire an SEO professional? In my opinion, such contracting of services only makes sense when a company either has enough money to throw around or they have much more important tasks for their own employees to perform. I compare it to online grocery shopping – it saves you time and effort, but unless you’re disabled, filthy rich, or ungodly busy it is not a cost effective option.
Of course, I’m not going to begrudge anyone the opportunity to sub out a service they do not feel comfortable with performing themselves. Every executive has the right to decide which is more valuable to the company in this situation: time or money. I understand that, and I also respect a person who focuses on contributing their strengths rather than faking strengths that eventually cost the company due to incompetence and pride.
You will find those same types of people in the search engine marketing profession. Men and women have forged careers in search engine marketing because they learned how to retell someone else’s stories and to write “new” articles containing recycled information. Those types are actually better at sales and personal PR than SEO.
So what exactly makes a person an SEO expert? Seriously. Don't accept someone's claims without critically examining them. There's no federal or industry-wide standard. So who makes an expert an expert? What’s the difference between an expert and an expert fake? And how can you tell one from the other?
It's a slippery slope. Sadly, it is an industry where many companies profit from client ignorance. Am I going to present clear-cut evidence here of my claims? Not a chance. I don't have to, and I don’t want to make any specific enemies. I learned what I know by studying SEO online wherever I could because I was trying to join the industry. What I realized through my extensive online reading and professional relationships is that a good humble businessperson is always more trustworthy and reliable than a self-proclaimed expert. Humility is key. Use your discernment.
If you don't believe me, subscribe to a few SEO newsletters and catch up on your SEO articles. See for yourself if you don't read the same thing over and over, only presented in a different order or from a different angle. Study which groups or individuals support and compliment each other in SEO articles, forums, and blogs. Notice how they build a castle of thoughts out of thin air. In this industry, some will corroborate each other if it means reinforcing the fuzzy logic that has benefited their own business. The lack of fresh information is fairly convincing evidence that search engine optimization and keyword research are not all that complicated. If they were, the experts wouldn't have to recycle to put out new articles and blogs.
For all of you still willing and ready to hire an SEO professional, all I ask is that you make an educated decision based on research. And always check with clients the firm claims to have serviced. Find out if they were really a client, what type of service they received, and if they were satisfied with that service. And, of course, make sure you aren’t verifying one firm with one of their bread-and-butter partners. Remember, things are not always what they appear. If you keep these basic considerations in mind, you should do well when choosing the right SEO professional.

Quality SEO Check List from a Professional SEO Company

By Paul Steven

There are a number of high-end quality Search Engine Optimising (SEO) and Marketing firms out there today. Ever wondered what is really involved when a website is put through its SEO maintenance check list. The following is an example of work that is normally carried out by professional SEO Company 360innovate.
ANALYSISFirstly, when a customer approaches 360 with a view to having SEO work carried out on their site the initial stage is to analyse the site and see what keywords they already target (if any) and also what on-site work needs to be done on the website (we call this on-page optimisation). It's a bit like having a health and safety assessment on your premises, we go through the nuts and bolts of your site, the text, images, layout, navigation, structure and usability features to make sure that its been built to a standard that enables your site to rank at its most optimum in the main search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask).
There are at least 200 individual areas we examine and check and it is a very important first stage that gets you started. Thankfully there are a lot of customers out there who have employed good designers who make sure that the initial work is done and that the first stages as described above can be kept to a minimum.
KEYWORD RESEARCHKeyword research is a very important step used in identifying what people actually type in the search engines to find your product or services.
For example, most of our customers find us using "SEO Company", or "SEO Company UK", or just "SEO", but we also get traffic from "Search Engine Optimisation Company Scotland" or "Internet Marketing Company" plus a whole range of other sources.
Another factor to take into consideration is the conversion rate from a particular keyword search. Conversion rates can be determined by how many times it takes a unique visit to your site to actually buy something or even make an enquiry. There may be multiple reasons why your site is not converting from not targeting the correct traffic, bad design or navigation, perhaps your site suffers from a number of negatives that simply put people off from ordering/enquiring due to the lack of trust.
THE COMPETITIONWe look at their site, not just once, but every day, we monitor changes, we log them, we work out why they are achieving such good results and we implement a strategy to better them.
KEYWORD DEFINITIONAfter extensive research into the keywords and phrases used in your industry we agree with you the amount of keywords that you wish us to focus on.
This will vary from customer to customer, some customers will only want us to focus on a small amount of keywords for their SEO campaign and some will want us to focus on thousands of keywords, this is also how we define how much time we spend on your site initially and on a ongoing basis and according how much it will cost.
ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS/PRESS RELEASESWe produce articles and on-line press releases related to your business on a monthly basis linked to the keywords we use in your campaign, with links to your site within the content. We then release/publish these documents within trusted on-line sites that the search engines like to visit and read on a regular basis, this in turn links back to your site and gives you favourable search engine listing results, as the search engines see you updating your content on a regular basis.
LINK BUILDINGWe will seek to link your site to as many other trusted sites available that are in your industry, for example if you are a retailer, we would link your site to National Retail Federation, or if you were a restaurant, we would link your site to a trusted restaurant review site.
Link Building is a fundamental part of any SEO package. Search engines monitor the links pointing to your site. Gathering trusted links to your domain is a natural progression and any website that suddenly accumulates hundreds or thousands of links in a very short time frame will be flagged for underhand tactics and possibly put under review with a ban from the search engines being the favoured outcome. Not a good business strategy.
TIME SCALESThe time taken achieve good page one results differs according to how competitive your industry is, and anyone or company that guarantees you top ten results within a short time-frame be extremely cautious about employing them to carry out SEO work for you. However, If you have an uncompetitive keyword or phrase, then you can normally see results in about 6-12 weeks, if on the other hand you are in a fiercely competitive industry then it can be anywhere between 4-12 months.
ONGOING WORKEverything spoken about here is not something that we do on one occasion, but is completely and utterly ongoing. It's best to see SEO or Internet Marketing as a pro-active approach. The guidelines are always changing. What may work well today may not tomorrow. There are other approaches that we have not even touched upon in this article such as viral marketing, blogging, email marketing, podcasts, video marketing and social media marketing. The web is a fluid market, if you stand still then your competitors will pass you by.

Your SEO Service, Ethical SEO, and Competitor Monitoring

By Scott Buresh

When a company undertakes a search engine optimization program, whether it is performed in-house or outsourced to an SEO service, most of the attention (and rightly so) is focused on the company website. This is the one aspect where there is a feeling of control--once a website is released into the wild, the company will have to see how its site fares against all the other websites out there, whether the other sites are using ethical SEO tactics or not.
Apart from changes made to the company website, the assumption is often that the company and, if it is using one, its SEO service, has zero control over what appears in search engine results. However, this is not usually the case. Often, you or your SEO service can have a direct effect on search engine results by monitoring your competitors and reporting them to the major search engines when the SEO techniques used on their site fall outside what is popularly referred to as ethical SEO. (Please note that while I believe that the word "ethical" is tossed around too often, "ethical SEO" has become the standard phrase to describe white hat techniques, and so it is the phrase I use throughout the article.)
Primary CompetitorsTo start with, let’s define competitors. Almost every company has at least a handful of other companies that it considers to be primary competitors--the ones that sell the same products and services, that are of similar size, and so on. It is important that the SEO efforts (or lack thereof) of these competitors, whether they are using ethical SEO techniques or not, be monitored on a routine basis. If they have not hired an SEO service of their own, or if they have not started doing SEO in-house at all, you will have peace of mind knowing that the use of this channel, for the moment, is yours. If your competitors begin an SEO campaign, with or without an outside SEO service, you can learn much about their sales and marketing tactics by evaluating the keyphrases that they target. And you can also investigate whether they are using ethical SEO practices in their campaign.
Your Online CompetitorsIt’s important to keep in mind that it is unlikely that searchers are going to decide only between you and the primary competitors you have listed. They are going to consider any company that matches their particular needs and that shows up for their search term. This is why your criteria for a competitor online should broaden to encompass any company that offers products or services like yours that outranks you for any of your targeted keyphrases. If your in-house staff or your SEO service not only continually monitors your search engine positions but also analyzes the companies that appear above you in search results, you can often identify forward-looking competitors of which you were previously unaware--your primary competitors of tomorrow.
ViolationsThis brings us to the key issue of ethical SEO. Search engine optimization is still a very new concept to most companies. Even the most respected companies can make mistakes in this arena, either by choosing the wrong SEO service, or by trying to avoid hiring an SEO service altogether by bringing it in house with well-intentioned but unqualified people. For example, BMW’s German site was recently removed temporarily from the Google index for using doorway pages--something that is not considered an ethical SEO practice. It stands to reason that your competitors are also not immune to violations.
Bad FirmsThere are very notable examples of otherwise smart and established companies hiring an SEO service that put them in a worse situation than before they pursued SEO--by getting their site removed from major search engines for violating the engine’s terms of service, for example. Not long ago, there was a well-publicized example where most of the clients of a Las Vegas SEO service were penalized. Almost all of the clients claimed that they were not informed that the firm was not practicing ethical SEO and that they were therefore at risk.
SEO firms are generally divided into two camps--those called "White Hats" (those that use ethical SEO practices and will never knowingly violate a search engine’s terms of service) and those called "Black Hats" (those that do not use ethical SEO practices and that will attempt to unravel the latest algorithms and exploit any loopholes to achieve rankings at any cost). Neither approach is invalid--it is not against the law to violate the terms of service of a search engine. Moreover, black hat techniques can be quite effective. However, the tactics are risky, and anyone hiring an SEO service that wears a black hat and does not use ethical SEO practices should definitely be apprised of this risk up front.
Internal ResourcesFirms are often tempted to avoid hiring an SEO service by performing SEO in-house, and the project almost always falls onto an already overburdened IT department. The problem with approaching SEO from a strictly technical mindset is that the strategies employed, such as the keyphrases targeted, will not necessarily be in line with the goals of the marketing and sales departments. In addition, an IT resource will usually approach SEO from a purely technical standpoint, without being aware of ethical SEO practices, and this can lead to trouble. Penalization is a very real possibility, and it is hard to get back onto an index once your site has been removed.
MonitoringA thorough SEO service will monitor not only the handful of competitors that you deem crucial but also the sites that appear higher than you for any of your chosen search phrases. This may be somewhat controversial, especially to any SEO service or webmaster that uses tactics forbidden by the search engines’ terms of service. However, many white hat SEO service firms consider it an obligation to their clients to routinely monitor the sites of any competitor found on the engines to be sure it is using ethical SEO techniques.
There is a reason that every major search engine has a form to report sites who do not use ethical SEO tactics and who violate the terms of service so that these sites can be subsequently penalized or removed. Spam filters cannot catch all violations without also removing a large number of good sites. Search engines rely on their users to help them to keep their indexes clean and free of sites not using ethical SEO tactics. There are many techniques to spam an engine--far too many to list. However, a good SEO service not only knows what all of these techniques are but knows how to identify them when it sees them so they can be reported to the engine accurately.
The End ResultBusiness is business, and your interests often run directly counter to that of your competitors. When you report a website that is not using ethical SEO, it is very likely that it will be removed. This means there is one less company that you need to worry about in the online arena, at least for the time being. If the site in question outranked yours, you also get the added benefit of seeing your rankings improve as the violating pages are removed--provided, of course, that you are using ethical SEO techniques and steering clear of violations yourself, or you may be reported by a competitor of yours or its SEO service!
The engine also benefits from users reporting violations. Engines do not like people trying to trick their indexes, since there might then be pages showing up for particular search terms that are not actually relevant to those terms. Clearly, search engines understand this benefit--if the engines thought they could weed out all the spam themselves, they would not provide a reporting system. Supporting such a system, after all, is not free. Real people employed by the engine have to visit the offending pages to confirm that they are not using ethical SEO tactics.
In the notable example cited earlier of the firm that got most of its clients penalized, the owner of the SEO service in question was quoted as saying, "Google can kiss my ass. This is the Wild Wild West." He may be right--maybe it is the Wild Wild West. But there are a whole bunch of new sheriffs in town--and they are wearing white hats.

SEO Copy - Where Should I Use Keywords In My SEO Copywriting?

By Glenn Murray

When assessing what your website is about, search engines pay close attention to the words you use in your text links and headings (and it’s also argued that they pay more attention to the copy at the top of the page than to the copy at the bottom of the page). So make sure your copy in these areas is keyword rich.
Using keywords in links
For both internal and external links, try to use your target keyword as the link text (the part that’s normally blue and underlined). For example, on your “Cheap Second Hand Macs” page, you could include a text link to “Cheap Second Hand PCs”.
Using keywords in headings
Just as customers rely on headings to scan your site, so to do search engines. This means headings play a big part in how the search engines will index your site. Try to include your keyword phrase in your headings. In fact, think about inserting extra headings just for this purpose. Generally this will also help the readability of the site because it will help customers scan read.
For example, if you have a page detailing the benefits of cheap second hand computers, you could break it up into logical sections with the following headings.
"The cost benefits of cheap our second hand computers"
"The technical benefits of our cheap second hand computers"
"The support benefits of our cheap second hand computers"Using keywords at the start of the page
Many SEO experts believe that the search engines see words at the start of a page as more representative of what your site is about than words at the end (i.e. prominence). So it’s a good idea to make sure you use your keywords toward the start of each page. This normally happens fairly naturally, anyway, so don’t put a lot of effort into making it happen.

SEO Web Design - How To Use SEO Book Information

By Peter Nisbet

SEO web design is essential for high search engine listings, and the right choice of SEO book can be use to achieve that. There are many SEO books on offer online, but most seem too much alike and appear to provide the same information. The best type of SEO book is one that provides graphic examples of how successful sites have become successful through effective SEO web design.
Search engine optimization is a subject about which very few have a true understanding. It starts with your website, and the way that you arrange your pages into the site as a whole. To most people, SEO is the use of keywords on your site, and I still read webpages and blog postings that promote as many keywords in a web page as possible. If it’s not the more the merrier, then it’s the 1% - 3% keyword density fallacy. Follow that and your site will disappear off the listings!
There is too much written online about SEO that too many people take as gospel. Let’s dispel a few myths and bring some reality into the whole subject of search engine optimization. Take a look at the term for starters. Search Engine Optimization. What does it mean? Optimize your website for search engines? Why? Surely you should optimize your website to provide the best possible information to anybody who visits it!
And that is what search engines such as Google are now insisting on. It is no longer easy to get high search engine listings without good relevant content. Now, 1% - 3% keyword density is keyword stuffing. In a 700 word article, 7 – 21 keywords are excessive. Google and the other major search engines look at text relevant to the keyword, rather than repetitions of the keyword, as being good content. Too may repetitions will be punished.
That being so, it also difficult to design web page for a high listing. That is because there are so many web pages with good content: keep in mind that it is individual web pages that are listed and not complete websites. There must be other aspects of modern SEO that are relevant to high listings, but what are they? Well may you ask. That is what many SEO experts that offer their services at high prices online would also like to know.
There are, in fact, certain aspects of your website design that are totally relevant to your listing position, and they have nothing whatsoever to do with the content on each of your pages. This where the right book information can help you – if you buy the right book. This type of information is so valuable that nobody is going to give it all away free. Many sites provide a lot of free SEO information that could help you to improve your search engine listing, but only if you are also aware of the other factors that could destroy it.
I have read a lot about Google PageRank, and how you cannot get your web pages listed without a good page rank. Nonsense. I have web pages listed in the 10 on Google that have no Google page rank, at least according to the Google PageRank indicator on the Google Toolbar. Page rank is not necessary, but it helps. However, if you apply other, more important, aspects of search engine optimization to your web pages then PageRank become relatively unimportant.
On the other hand, if you do not apply these SEO techniques, PageRank becomes paramount. It is common sense. Google does not put more emphasis on one aspect of optimization than another, and while external links are important, they are not critical, no matter what you read. Google states that they give a great deal of emphasis to incoming links from other relevant web pages, yet pages can be listed highly without them against stiff opposition.
How is that? It is due to good onsite optimization, and a great deal of thought put into the design of a total website, rather than web pages individually, and the way that onsite links are designed. SEO design is not a matter of believing what theory SEO book information tells you, but of personal experience, unless you are reading the right SEO book.
So get rid of preconceptions and don’t believe all that you read. It is easy to get listed on Google in less than 2 days if you know how to do it, and also to get listed in the top 10 in two weeks if you go about it the right way.
So stop bleating and get your head down. Study the subject and don’t complain if you fail. Others don’t so find out what they do.

SEO - Can You Start an SEO Business For Free

By Anthony Gregory

Many Internet gurus will lead you to believe that you can make a ton of money as an SEO marketer without making any initial investment into it as a business. This is completely false. Although it is true that you can write a blog strewn with affiliates on a free site, or make yourself up a fancy online business card on a build it yourself website you are probably not going to make much money unless you have a little bit of money to invest in a high quality website with a decent domain name.
Many gurus who write books about this stuff will tell you that you can optimize your site for free by using certain keywords to describe your site etc. This is simply not true. In fact the trend in marketing is for the search engines to start penalizing sites that have too many keywords repeated throughout the main body of the page. This is why you need to be quite clever about your SEO marketing.
The reason is that it is completely impossible to make money on the Internet without an investment is because you must count your time as an investment. Surely your time is worth something and if you don’t value it, who will? Even if you have arranged not to pay for anything online, you need to pay yourself something. So if you pay yourself ten bucks per 500 word SEO article and write eight a day then you need to factor in the cost of your time as eighty bucks a day.
You can make money on the Internet as a SEO marketer without a big investment, but you will not make a six-figure income! You are probably looking in the below $5,000.00 region in that case. The intelligent thing to then do is invest part of that $5,000 back into your SEO business.

SEO - Tips on Making SEO Blog Content Look Good

By Anthony Gregory

It is highly recommended that you SEO your blog content. It is not recommended however that you make your blog sound stiff and technical for the sake of attracting search engines. When it comes to actually incorporating your keywords into your blog copy keep in mind that the best blogs are the ones that sound casual. Nobody wants to read a robotic repetitive piece of copy.
One key to keeping your blog looking neat and readable is to keep the content less than 300 words. 250 words per blog is idea. Keeping them looking reasonably uniform and the same length is also more visually eye catching and more likely to keep curious eyeballs on your page and not someone else’s.
Another thing you need to note is the way the headline of your blog article looks. Shorter is almost always better. Long search engine optimized blog titles don’t work if they are cut off at the end. Make sure that any blog headlines that you have are.
You should also make sure that your blog headlines are not too commercial or corny sounding. For instance a blog title such as “Make thousands a day using SEO!” is not going to work as well as a subtler phrase such as “How SEO Let Me Quit My Day Job.” Corny headlines look like spam to a lot of people when they get them on their RSS feeds so their eyes simply glaze over when they see something like “Hoodia Miracle Weight Loss Drug!” or “Grow Bigger Breasts in Three Days.”
Unless the acronym is very well known you are also supposed to stay away from using them as headlines in your blog. However this is not advised if your SEO title is too long as in “Valuable tips for Utilizing Search Engine Tips for Blogs.” It is much better to keep the language very simple as in “Top SEO Tips!”

By Adam Sturo

Remoting helps in communication between two or more application. It does not matter whether it is on same computer or on different computers and it is also possible that both are using different operating system. The dot net remoting helps in number of services such as control on the lifetime of objects and also helps in transporting message in different objects using communication channels.

Free Software for Non-profit Organizations

By Charlene Vacon

Once your organization finally gets a computer built in this century, your next step is to find software for it that won't deplete the coffers. Pirated software is tempting, but, if the ethical dilemma doesn't keep you away from it, its associated risks may: you could pick up a computer virus from pirated software or you could get caught with software you're not authorized to have.
The good news is that there is so much great free software, organizations on a budget can find great alternatives to many of the proprietary programs. For internet browsers, a lot of organizations have discovered that FireFox is comparable to Explorer, but without the Microsoft label. FireFox is available for free download on the internet.
Many people have even changed their operating systems from Windows to Ubuntu. Ubuntu runs very similar to MS Windows, so your learning curve won't be extreme. There are many different programs for the Ubuntu platform that do everything from word processing to number crunching.
SourceForge.net has thousands of free software options for everything from image editing programs like GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to financial management software. It is the hub for good-quality free software.
The reason that these programs are free is because they are what's known as Open Source. That means that people are welcome to change the programming code and, in effect, improve the programs. Users like you and I benefit by the access to these great programs, even if we are not very likely to alter the programming code.

SEO - Tips For Making SEO Copy More Personal

By Anthony Gregory

The problem with SEO copy (search engine optimized) is that often reads very robotic, repetitive and cold. However so many marketing experts say that you need to make an emotional connection with your reader in order to make sales. This means that you need to find the fine balance between making your copy sound personal and pleasing the search engine spiders and robots.
First of all never pose yourself an expert or a guru if you are not one. People can usually tell that you aren’t within the first paragraph or so of an article, especially if it is peppered with keywords and not much quality content. This type of content is easily identifiable as it is based on old-fashioned direct sales marketing techniques. Once people see those long sales letters on sites, they know it’s snake oil salesman time. It is better to connect with them on a one to one basis rather than in an imitation of some hotshot copywriter from the 1970s.
Never use the royal "we". Stay away from phrases like "We here at Search Engine City promises to deliver you the best copy” instead make it more personal by using the "you or your" form as in: "You are certain to find a keyword analyzer that is perfect for that special someone at here at Search Engine City.”
Another tip is to try and identify with your audience in some way. For instance if your audience is a bunch of affiliate marketers, refer to the practice of creating blogs with affiliate links as bum marketing which is the nickname for it. Try to write in the niche language that they are used to. Of course if you truly are an expert in your niche then writing this type of SEO enriched, yet user-friendly copy will not be difficult for you at all!

SEO Expert Guide - Black Hat SEO - Activities to Avoid (part 8/10)

By David Viney

In parts 1 - 7, you learnt how to develop your proposition, identify your key words and optimize and promote (for free) your site and pages on the world's search engines. You were also introduced to our mythical Doug (who sells antique doors, door handles, knockers, door bells or pulls and fitting services) in Windsor in the UK.
There are some search engine optimization and promotion techniques I did not cover, as they are unethical. In this part of the guide, I outline this techniques, so you can recognize and avoid them!
(a) Search Engine Ethics
Borrowing from the wild west, white hat SEO generally refers to ethical techniques, whilst black hat SEO is unethical techniques. Search engines are designed to help people find genuinely relevant results for the key words they enter, in a ranked order. Relevancy is a mixture of the "authority" of the site generally and the specific relevance of the page content to the search made. Anything which undermines this (ie. by creating false impressions of authority or relevance) is unethical because it undermines the key purpose of search engines.
Black hat practitioners tend to see search engine optimization as a war, and search engines and SEOs as the enemy, to be beaten by means fair or foul. White Hatters tend to view search engines as friends, who can help them get business.
(b) Hidden Page Text
Blackhatters create hidden text in page code (not intended for humans). At a simple level, this could be white text on a white background. The text is generally hidden because it does not fit with the rest of the page content but does help with search engine results. This by definition means that - as a human searcher - you are likely to be disappointed by the result when you land on this page.
In their Guide for Webmasters, Google implore you to "make pages for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users, or present different content to search engines than you display to users. " The guide goes on to specifically recommend you "avoid hidden text or hidden links". If you want to avoid being blacklisted by Google, then I would recommned you pay attention to this advice.
(c) Buying Inbound Links
In their Guide for Webmasters, Google ask you to "avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, 'Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?'"
You can find on the web links from PR8 sites on sale for $200. From our earlier exploration of PageRank, you'll understand why such a high price can be supported. As you can imagine, Google and others frown on this activity, as it undermines the whole principle of democracy that underpins PageRank. Buying votes? Unethical!
The consensus in forums is that Google look out for unnatural linking patterns, including substantial cross linking, sharp growth in backlink numbers and same anchor text in most links. I would advise you avoid this sort of activity altogether!
(d) Use of Link Farms and IBLNs
In their Guide for Webmasters, Google say "don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or 'bad neighborhoods' on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links."
In practice, Google identify 'bad neighbourhoods' by devaluing back-links from the same IP subnet. Where a site is simply a link farm site (that lists loads of links to other sites, in exchange for links back or money) Google will eventually identify it as a 'bad neighbourhood' and remove the links from it's index.
Independent Back Linking Networks (IBLNs) are a network of sites that all directly or indirectly link back to your site in such as a way as to promote it through the search engine rankings. The way IBLNs get around Google's IP monitoring is by using a completely different web-hosting plan for every site you want to link back directly to you.
This is very time-consuming and will cost you a lot of money. It is also not fool-proof and (if detected) can lead to Google simply wiping out all the direct referrers from their index (the sites they find flagrantly built simply to link to your main site) or, worse, dropping your entire IBLN - including the main site your were trying to optimise for. Don't be daft - keep it clean!
(e) Use of Cloaking Pages or Sneaky Redirects
In their Guide for Webmasters, Google recommend you "avoid 'doorway' pages created just for search engines, or other 'cookie cutter' approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content."
When Doug reads this, he begins to understand why doorknockers.com fails to rank higher in the search engines. That domain simply redirects to a different site (with a regular business name) which also fails to rank well in Google. This poor business-owner has clearly become an unwitting and almost certainly innocent victim og Google's policy to catch out Blackhatters.
He also understands why having his content on antique-door-knockers.com will be preferrable to redirecting people to a domain based on his company name (Doug Chalmers Limited).
Next we turn to tools you can use to monitor your ongoing optimization effectiveness...

8 Tips for Small Business Success - Internet & Search Engine Marketing Strategies for 2008

By Erik Rosenow

As we begin the new year, and earnestly think about 2008, one of the activities we typically do as small business owners is evaluate our challenges and successes over the prior year. If you find yourself reflecting, "My business really could have benefited from having more customers last year" or "I wish my business had been more profitable", then we encourage you to read on to find out how you can be more successful and get 2008 kicked off to a grand start!
An area that most small businesses neglect is marketing their businesses on the Internet. After building a website, many business owners believe that having an "online presence" from a website is all they need. But few companies have experienced Internet success by just "building it." Consumers are online in ever growing numbers to look for local vendors and businesses to fill their needs. In fact, the latest research from Nielsen indicates that 73% of consumers use search engines as their primary means to find businesses like yours. But if you already have a website, then why isn't your business skyrocketing? Why aren't those consumers finding you online? As our new year's gift to you, we have developed the following 8 tips for planning your online marketing strategies. We will make sure those active online consumers find you!
A quick story: Three women decide to meet at a park to let their 3 year-olds play together. On the way, one woman notices one of her car tires is low and sees a nail in it. A second one hears a radio advertisement on her way to the park, describing a new spa that just opened in the city. She decides it is time to treat herself to a little relaxation. The third one is reminded at the park that she volunteered to make a dinner reservation for the 3 women and their husbands to go to dinner together the following weekend.
All 3 of these women are likely to use search engines to help. The first will probably search for a local tire dealer or the kind of tire she has on her car. The second one may not remember the spa's name, so will search online to try to find the spa (or a competitor) to treat herself. The third one will use a search engine to find a hip restaurant and impress her friends with a reservation there. All three of these examples are daily consumer situations, and opportunities for you to add new customers to your business, when the situations are related to your kind of business.
1. Do some sleuthing. When doing your own shopping, use Internet search engines to find local businesses. See what comes up and use your own shopping behavior as an indicator of what a consumer is likely to do when they are looking for a business like yours. Put on the hat of a consumer who might be inclined to contact you or do business with you. What were the compelling websites that induced you to visit or call their business, and to make a purchase? Do you know the keywords your customers use to find you online?
2. Look beyond online directory listings. If you provide services in your local community as an accountant, chiropractor, dentist, travel agent, insurance agent, doctor, florist, limo service, cleaning service, plumber, auto repair shop, or a moving company, and you think that all you need is a listing online and that's how customers will find you, you can do much better. In online listings, customers will also find your competitors, because online listings are categorized by business. You have very little control over the content and how you are shown to prospective customers. Since most traffic to online directories comes from search engines, you are also at least one additional step removed from your potential customers. Invest in online search engine advertising to get as close to your potential customers as possible. Make sure they find you and not your competitor.
3. Pay attention to your competition. If you think you're the only one selling what you sell or providing the services you provide, think again. We all have competition. Otherwise, you wouldn't be wondering where all your customers are. Your competition may not be readily known to you, and the Internet has broken down many geographic competitive barriers, but there are other businesses out there marketing to the same potential customers as you. Why aren't they finding and going to you? What is your competition doing differently from you? Some of your competitors are investing in search engine marketing to drive customers to their websites, and you should be, too.
4. Make your website compelling and effective. First impressions are critical, and even more so in the online world. Ask five people to give you feedback on your website, specifically in the areas of their first impression when reaching your site, your credibility, content about what you do and what needs you address, and whether you are easy to contact. Ask your customers to evaluate your website's usefulness and whether it provides what they seek. Is it compelling? Use your website not only to display your qualifications, but also as a way to capture the attention of the visitor. Put yourself in your customers' shoes. What need are they trying to solve, and what would they like to see when they reach your website? Websites that are more about visitors' needs will be more effective. Think solutions, advice, discounts, offers...capture their attention. Make contacting you easy - display your phone number, hours of operation, etc. prominently.
5. Believe it - marketing is an investment. Internet marketing should be an investment, not an expense. When making a decision how you will market your business in 2008, look to the Internet first. Search engines are probably the best way to get the highest return on investment (ROI) for your marketing dollar. Demand to know how a return on your investment will be determined when speaking with potential providers of online marketing services. Get the biggest bang for your hard-earned buck!
6. Do the math. What's a good example? What should the math look like? With search engine marketing, the math should be easy to calculate. For example, let's say your time is worth $50/hour, a customer is worth $200 to you, and each time someone clicks on your ad it costs you $3.00. If you invested in search engine ads and got 1000 targeted visitors to your website, and 2% of them became customers (20 new customers), that would mean $4,000 in new revenue for your business. Your cost would be $3,000 (based on $3.00 per visitor), and if you had a partner execute this strategy for you, your time savings would be worth at least $5,000 (it would take you at least 100 hours to get set up and manage this yourself). You would make at least a return of $1,000 on a $3,000 investment ($4,000 revenue - $3,000 cost). That equates to a 33% return on investment (which, incidentally is much higher than the stock or bond market). Don't forget, you also would save yourself $5,000 of your own time, that you could devote to these new customers, or your family and personal well-being!.
7. Let experts help you. As a small business owner, how much free time do you have? Most of us admit to wearing dozens of different hats. And if you do have extra time, are you going to spend it learning the complexities of Internet marketing or keeping up with the ever-changing formulas that the search engines use to determine who gets displayed and when? From the thousands of business owners we have met, the common theme is "I'll learn it tomorrow." How many different things are always "one day away?" When it comes to acquiring new customers and growing your business, don't let your procrastination get in the way. Let the experts handle the complex stuff. Do you know how to create the most effective search engine ads to attract the right customers for your business? When planning your Internet marketing strategies for 2008, don't go it alone. After all, you hire an architect to design a building or home, so why not hire a search engine marketing expert to design your online marketing and customer acquisition strategy?
8. Talk to your merchant association or local chamber of commerce. Ask your fellow merchants what they are doing to attract new customers to their businesses. Ask your merchant association, convention/visitors bureau or your local chamber what they are doing to help you "get found" on the Internet. How are they looking out for you, and providing programs and solutions to help you grow your business? Your peers are a great forum for interacting and sharing ideas, and becoming better educated about business growth opportunities. Put together an interest group within your association and ask for educational resources. AdvancedLocal is one group who will offer free web-based or local educational sessions about the opportunities available to you to market your business online.
It is our sincere hope that these tips will help you start 2008 with a bang, and ensure you stay current on trends in Internet marketing, the opportunities with search engine marketing, and the consumer demands of finding you (or your competitors) online. Make search engine marketing an essential part of your business planning and investment strategy, and you will find greater success in 2008, as tens of thousands of other local businesses have already discovered by employing these simple strategies.
Finally, make your website visible. Make sure your business is found when and where consumers are looking online...for you. Welcome to 2008!
